Bethany Beyond the Jordan is central to the concept of Christian Pilgrimage in the Holy Land and one of three of the most important places in the life of Jesus: His birth in Bethlehem, his baptism in Jordan and his resurrection in Jerusalem.

With its roots in the Lutheran tradition, it is a pilgrimage founded on the meaning of baptism, one of the fundamental Christian sacraments of Lutheran doctrine.

The Lutheran Church at Bethany Beyond the Jordan is a place of worship and dialogue, of meditation and study, and of listening and learning. The focus is on the spiritual, historical, political and ecological aspects of the site.
