The Lutheran Church and Pilgrim Center at Bethany Beyond the Jordan is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). This pilgrim center was made possible by a gracious land gift by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Thanks to the support from many churches, congregations, organizations and individuals the plot of land now boasts a church, a working pilgrim center and a growing garden.
- 2008 the ELCJHL was given the land to build the Lutheran Church at Bethany Beyond Jordan
- 2010 the process of planning the construction and designing the architecture started.
- 2012 the groundbreaking of the church was celebrated
- 2014 on the 6th of January, the church was dedicated/inaugurated
The first chaplains on site were Rolf and Kerstin Pearson from Sweden. They started the work in 2014 and after two years on site they were succeeded in 2016 by chaplains Jonas and Karin Bodin also from Sweden.
The Lutheran Church and Pilgrim Center at Bethany Beyond the Jordan are supervised by the bishop of the ELCJHL. An International Board is also appointed for supporting the work of the site. The International Board is an advisory board to the bishop and the chaplains at the site and they meet once a year.
